When the weather turns frosty and the lights start twinkling, there’s nothing cozier than settling in with a heartwarming holiday movie—especially one starring lovable animal characters. Whether they’re singing, scheming, or saving Christmas, these critters bring joy, wonder, and plenty of seasonal charm to the screen. Here are five of our all-time favorite animal-centric holiday films, that feature stop motion animation and puppetry.

1. Robin Robin (2021)

This adorable stop-motion musical follows Robin, a little bird raised by a family of mice. Her journey to prove she’s a real mouse—while discovering her own unique gifts—makes for a sweet, heartfelt holiday tale full of charm.

Fun fact:  The warm and cozy aesthetic of the characters was created using a technique called needle felting--using a barbed needle to shape wool fibers into felt.

Kermit the Frog wears a top hat and jacket in front of several mice puppets wearing similar old fashioned clothing
Miss Piggy and her two daughters have curly ringlet hair and wear bonnets and old fashioned dresses
Tiny Tim is played by a felt frog and sits at a table dressed in old-fashioned clothing

2.  The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992)

While technically about humans and animals, the Muppets’ mix of frogs, pigs, rats, and more absolutely steal the show. Kermit as Bob Cratchit, Miss Piggy as Emily Cratchit and the entire Muppet ensemble bring warmth, whimsy, and unforgettable songs to Dickens’ classic.

Hot take:  A Christmas Carol has been produced in many versions on film and stage.  In our humble opinion, this version boasts the most adorable Tiny Tim on record!

3. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (1964)

A true holiday icon, Rudolph’s story celebrates standing out and shining bright—literally. With its charming stop-motion animation and lovable cast of reindeer, elves, and misfit toys, it’s a timeless favorite for all ages.

Fun fact:  All of the the stop motion on this film was created in Tokyo by the Japanese studio MOM productions; while American company Rankin/Bass produced.

4. Shaun the Sheep: The Flight Before Christmas (2023)

Shaun and his woolly flock spring into action when Timmy goes missing, leading to a hilarious and heartwarming Christmas Eve adventure. This special blends clever humor with delightful animal character moments.

Fun fact:  Shaun the Sheep originally appeared in the Wallace & Gromit short film, A Close Shave, before getting his own spin-off series.

5. Claymation Christmas Celebration (1987)

This nostalgic stop-motion gem features a parade of talking dinosaurs, singing camels, and other whimsical creatures celebrating the season. Its playful sketches and musical numbers make it a unique and joyfully quirky holiday treat.  (And you just might see a cameo from the California Raisins!)

Hot take:  Dinosaurs are a severely under-rated Christmas animal!
