October 31st has come… and gone (sadly). The dust has settled, and a number of aggregate pet costume compilations have appeared on sites such as BuzzFeed and The Huffington Post. Well, they have their lists and we have ours. Below, we present 20 of our personal favorites.
Before hopping forward to more modern costumes, let’s make a quick stop in 1915. These were simpler times, before modern technology rendered kitty housekeeping skills useless and reduced them to furry balls of lethargy.

I’m not sure whether this dog unsuccessfully attempted to dress up as a thief, or succeeded at dressing up as my worst nightmare. I’m sure he’s very cute without the pantyhose, but as it stands those ‘Hounds of Baskerville’ eyes are giving me the willies.

Here’s a smart pet owner. Understanding the low likelihood that their cat would be moving from the floor to go trick-or-treating, this person dressed their cat up right where it was. If you’ve stood next to someone who’s been online in the past year, you recognize this as Nyan Cat. The nerdier among you will notice that the PopTart isn’t the right color, but – come on guys! Sometimes you must work with what you have, and the ice cream sundae flavor pictured is the superior flavor, so I don’t blame the person.

And now for something completely different! I’d imagine that elephants, by virtue of being huge and loud, would make excellent poltergeists…

The first time I saw the video below, it scared the heck out of me. What right do spiders have to get so huge? They’re already terrifying! They don’t need to be any bigger!
Once my friends coaxed me down from the ceiling, I realized it was – in fact – an adorable dog in what seems to be a fairly popular canine costume. Here’s a pug in the same get-up.

Lady Gaga might be the queen of the charts and her Little Monsters’ hearts these days, but back in the day it was Madonna who was pushing the pop culture envelope… and this cat won’t let you forget it. That is Madonna, right? Back me up here, guys.

This little guy is the scariest turtle in the tank.

Junk food is bad for you – duh. But seeing these guys dressed up as walking, barking billboards for fast food joints makes me hungrier for a Whopper than any of those silly ‘The King’ commercials ever have. Marketing teams, take note!

Michael J. Fox has nothing on this guy, another well-dressed pug from the blog ‘Go Pug Yourself’. ‘Don’t mind if we do.

Cats love fish. My friend’s cat goes from certifiably crazy to absolutely freaking bonkers when you open a can of tuna in her presence. If she were really smart, she wouldn’t sit around all day waiting for me to make a tuna melt. No, she’d become a scuba diver so she could go straight to the source. Unfortunately, you know, cats are too busy licking themselves and tearing up the couch to actually do anything, so being dressed up in a scuba diver costume is about as close as she’ll get.

I’m not going to comment on this, not because I don’t like it, but because I can’t type when I’ve got my hands balled into fists that I’m waving around while I make screechy ‘EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE’ noises. It’s cute and meta, which appeals to me as a lady and a closet hipster.

Horsey Trotter and the Sorcerer’s Salt Lick! Ha!

Speaking of horses, you wouldn’t believe how long it took for me to discern that the horseman was riding a dog and not a miniature pony or something. It’s the hooves that threw me off, but in retrospect the snout should have been a dead giveaway.

Just as men and women seem to enjoy dressing up as caricatures of each other come Halloween, so do different species of animals like mixing things up. Here we have a dog dressed most convincingly as a rabbit.

Oh my good gravy, what in the living heck IS that?

Here’s a palate cleanser after that scary dog/human/zombie/monster/thing. It’s a little puppy dressed as Winnie the Pooh with some ‘Hunny’! And he’s sweeping!! Say it with me, now – d’awwww…

Super Ferret’s alter alias is ‘Morpheus’ – a regular ferret who frequents his master’s Dungeons and Dragons games until the world needs him to bite someone’s hand or not use the litter box properly. It’s all in a day’s work for Super Ferret.

Okay, I don’t like to play favorites, but I will when it comes to corgis. Cute Overload may be partial to the Italian Greyhound in the AT-AT costume and we reposted for a reason. We love it, too. But in my opinion, the corgi dressed as Babe the Blue Ox is easily the best pet I saw this year (unless the costume was from last year, in which case I’ll say it’s just the best pet costume ever). Take a look at these pictures and tell me I’m wrong:

Oh shoot, sorry. Christmas isn’t until, like, forever, right? What? You mean it’s already the second week in November? How did that happen?
